Artist Statement
My artistic practice explores the intersections of gender and transfeminine identity through a conceptual, DIY, post-punk approach, utilizing gender tropes to question and redefine transgender identity. Drawing on feminist critique, trans feminine lived experience, and contemporary art practices, I employ methods such as digital and analog photography, humor, repetition, everyday object readymades, and illustration to challenge binary gender constructs and highlight their fluidity. I critically question and reconstruct the concept of identity through less direct physical forms (i.e., genetalia, hormone replacement therapy) and concentrate on abstracted forms of dialogue, whether that be audio, visual, or a combination of both. My practice's goal is to express and share the authentic experiences of transness, focusing on self-definition and the ongoing interplay between physicality, identity, and social norms. I promote informed conversations about how gender is understood and perceived across popular culture, with an emphasis on TV and historical cinema, as these discussions are crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of the complex nature of gender identity in contemporary society.
